About Nutritionist

A nutritionist is an expert individual who is qualified and certified to promote health and the managing of diseases by the right use of food and nutrition. Nutritionists mostly work in hospitals, long-term care facilities, medical offices, or nursing homes advising people on what they should eat in order for them to lead a healthy lifestyle or for them to be able to achieve a health-related goal. Nutritionists as a term isn’t regulated, which means anyone can call themselves a nutritionist even without any formal training, certification, or license. This is one of the huge differences between a nutritionist and dietician. Dietitians are regulated and have to be certified and qualified while nutritionists do not, essentially meaning every dietitian is a nutritionist but not every nutritionist is a dietitian.

What They Can Do

A nutritionist can provide clinical nutrition where they usually work in clinical settings, with each patient individually on inpatient and/or outpatient basis to assess, design and implement dietary strategies and nutritional therapies. This is usually for a particular medical issue that needs to be resolved like hypertension, obesity, or diabetes. They can at times be called to come up with a plan of action for those that have their overall diets affected by a treatment protocol like chemotherapy. A nutritionist can also work in places such as schools, locat, state, and federal government agency programs, community health clinics and recreational centers, and health maintenance organizations (HMOs) for children, at risk families, and the elderly designed to address certain nutritional issues.

Types

There are a few different types of nutritionists. Sports nutritionists help athletes enhance their athletic performances by assigning them the right diet and nutrients to do just that.

Pediatric nutritionists aim to provide and promote the best nutritional health for infants, children, and adolescents.

Gerontological nutritionists are specialists that design, manage, and put effective and nutrition strategies into action advocating quality of life and health for older adults. This is a growing sub speciality as there is a growth of awareness in how integral nutrition is to healthy ageing and disease management.
