About General Physician 

A general physician (GP) is a specialist who’s highly trained and provides a large range of non-surgical healthcare to patients of all ages, usually adults, by giving them more preventative care with health education. They can treat both acute and chronic illnesses but for the most part are concerned in more difficult, serious, or unusual medical problems continuing to see the patient in their care until the problems have been resolved or stabilised. The importance of a GP varies from country to country as do the requirements to become one. In the United Kingdom for example, the individual must take at least 5 years of training after medical school where they then obtain their bachelor of medicine degree and their bachelor of surgery degree.  

What They Can Do

General physicians are mostly referred to by other doctors, in most cases by the patient’s general practitioner. With every one of their patients, whether it be one or health problems the doctor tells them about, a GP’s assessment is always comprehensive allowing any other problems and possibilities to be detected that were missed out on previously. As mentioned before, GP’s are trained to care for both simple and complex illnesses even where diagnosis may be difficult. With their broad training and variation in knowledge, they can recommend the right treatment for their patients while also taking into consideration the social and psychological impact that they may be facing from the disease. General physicians, while not qualified to perform surgery, are integral in making sure that the patient is reviewed beforehand to assess their risk status and recommend the right management to reduce risk of the operation being performed. Even after that has taken place, postoperative, the GP can assist with ongoing medical problems or complications.
