What is Acute Kidney Failure?

Acute Kidney Failure is when the kidneys suddenly lose the ability to eliminate fluids, waste materials and excess salts. Which are essentially the kidneys’ main functions, to filter the body. Due to this, body fluids can increase to dangerous levels. It will also cause electrolytes and waste material to accumulate in the body. Both these symptoms are life-threatening. Causes of it include severe or sudden dehydration, acute tubular necrosis (ATN) which is damage to the tubes within the kidney that carry excess salts and waste materials, kidney injury from poisons or certain medications, and more.

Treatment

Though it is life-threatening, those in good health can recover with it becoming reversible. Treatment options include an assigned diet plan which would include less liquids, more carbohydrates, less protein, salt and potassium. There is medication that can be prescribed by the doctor to prevent infections and help the kidney perform its main functions. Dialysis may be necessary and it will most likely be temporary. In severe cases, it may become permanent.
