What is Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery that uses smaller cuts than expected. The surgeon makes a small cut and inserts a tool called a laparoscope, a slender tool that has a tiny video camera with a light attached to it on the end. With it, they can look at a video monitor and see what’s going on in the body. If it weren’t for this tool, the cut would need to be much larger. The surgeon will not need to reach into the body either. It was primarily used for gallbladder surgery and gynecology operations but is now also in use for the liver, intestines and more organs. There is much less scarring as compared to more invasive techniques. Advanced laparoscopic surgery can be used in some operations, this is when the surgeon puts the camera and the surgical tool together in the same opening within the skin, creating even lesser scarring, but this is more trickier as the instruments are much closer to each other. Another way can also be when the surgeon uses a device that lets them reach in with a hand but the cut made has to be bigger than when in a usual laparoscopic surgery, still being smaller than in a traditional surgery.

Procedure

The full procedure of a laparoscopic surgery is when the surgeon makes several small cuts, usually each one is no more than a half-inch long, inserts a tube through in each opening, and then puts the camera and surgical instruments through them. The surgeon proceeds to perform the operation. After the surgery, the patient will only have small scars, they will get out og the hospital quicker, they’ll feel less pain, heal faster, and will be able to get back to all their activities sooner.
