What is Bonding?

Bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure used to restore or improve a person’s smile. It’s used to repair chipped/cracked teeth, to change the shape of teeth, to close spaces between teeth, to repair decayed teeth, and more. While dental bonding has its advantages like having the least amount of tooth enamel removed, it has major disadvantages. It does not resist stains very well, the bonding materials do not last very long, it’s not as strong as other restorative procedures and the materials can possibly chip and break off the tooth. Hence why dental bonding is best for small cosmetic changes and temporary corrections.

Treatment

In dental bonding, a durable plastic material, a tooth-colored resin material, is applied and hardened with a special light which bonds the material with the tooth. The procedure takes approximately 30-60 minutes per tooth. The bonding done on the tooth/teeth lasts up to 3-10 years before needing to be touched up or replaced providing oral hygiene is maintained like brushing teeth twice a day, flossing at least once a day, rinsing with an antiseptic mouthwash once or twice a day and regularly seeing the dentist for check ups and cleaning.
