What are Dentures?

Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and surrounding tissues. They can either be complete, where all teeth are missing and replaced or partial when there are still some natural teeth remaining. A complete denture may be done with the ‘immediate’ method, where dentures are placed immediately after the removal of all teeth. Or it may be done with the ‘conventional’ method, where the denture procedure is done 8-12 weeks after the removal of the teeth allowing the gum tissue to heal first. Complete dentures are more of a temporary solution until the conventional can be done because the structures of the teeth tissues change as it heals. Therefore, further adjustments will be required later. Partial dentures are used when there are one or more natural teeth remaining. The replacement teeth are attached to a pink or gum-colored plastic base, it is occasionally connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth.

Treatment

The dentures, once inserted, can feel out of place or loose for a few weeks. But this will change when the cheek muscles and tongue adapt to keep them in place making them easy to put in and to remove. It may also feel uncomfortable to eat with dentures on and pronouncing certain things may be hard, but the patient will get used to this the more they wear them. Denture adhesive can help with better tight-fitting and dentures are safe when used as directed. Applying too much adhesive might cause harm to soft and hard tissues which can at times have inflammation appear.
