What is a Kidney Transplant?

A kidney transplant is a surgical procedure to replace a healthy kidney from a donor into a person whose kidneys no longer function properly. The donor can be either living or deceased.

Kidneys are the vital organs, bean-shaped and located on each side of the spine below the rib cage. The main function of kidneys is to remove waste, minerals, and fluids from our blood by producing urine.

When kidneys aren’t functioning properly, harmful waste gets accumulated in our body which further raises blood pressure and ultimately can lead to kidney failure which is also called end-stage kidney disease.

Common causes of kidney failure ae

  • Diabetes
  • Chronic, uncontrolled high blood pressure
  • Polycystic kidney disease

Why kidney transplant is done?

Kidney transplant is often done for end-stage kidney disease. As compared to dialysis, kidney transplant is associated with the following benefits

  • Better quality of life
  • Fewer dietary restrictions
  • Lower risk of death
