What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty also called a nose job is a surgical procedure done to change or improve the shape of the nose. It can be performed for medical reasons or just for cosmetic reasons. Medical reasons can be the correction of disfigurement of nose resulted from birth defects or any other trauma. Cosmetic reasons can be the improvement of the shape and appearance of the nose.

Risks related to the procedure

Rhinoplasty is major surgery and carries risks such as

  • Extensive bleeding
  • Infections
  • Reaction to anesthesia

Some other risk related to rhinoplasty may include

  • Difficulty in breathing through the nose
  • Uneven looking nose
  • Persistent pain or swelling
  • Permanent scarring

Planning rhinoplasty

The upper portion of the nose is bone and the lower portion is cartilage. Rhinoplasty can change the shape of the bone and cartilage. While planning a nose job, discuss it with your surgeon and your surgeon will consider your facial features, the shape of your nose and then customize a plan for you.

Surgery

Rhinoplasty is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or under the general anesthesia depending upon the complexity of the surgery and it also depends upon the preference of your surgeon.

  • Local anesthesia: This anesthesia is only applied to the specific body part. A pain-numbing medication is injected in the nasal cavity and the patient is sedated by a medication given through the intravenous line.
  • General anesthesia: General anesthesia affects the whole body and the patient becomes unconscious during the surgery.

A small external incision is made at the base of the nose between the nostrils. The surgeon then proceeds to adjust the bone and cartilage of the nose.

After the surgery, you are monitored and you can leave on the same day if you don’t have any medical complications.
